Glossary of common Fediverse lingo
A
ActivityPub. A communication protocol developed by W3C for decentralized social networking. It is the basis for the Fediverse.
Akkoma. A microblogging Fediverse software, which is a fork of Pleroma, which was made to address an ongoing controversy with Pleroma at the time, as well as to introduce new features with faster pace, such as MFM support and performance improvements.
C
CW. Short for content warning.
Chuckya. A microblogging Fediverse software, which is a fork of Mastodon Glitch Edition, which in turn is a fork of Mastodon. It addresses some shortcomings of Mastodon compared with other software by adding features such as emoji reactions, ability to change media attachment limit and pools with media and only one option.

defed. See defederation.
defederation. To stop activity from being received from and be sent to a Fediverse instance.
F
FE. Short for frontend.
Fediverse. A decentralized social media network, which consists of separate services running software which implement ActivityPub protocol to communicate with each other.
fedi. See Fediverse.
fediblock. See defederation.
fedizen. A member of the Fediverse.
G
glitch-soc. See Mastodon Glitch Edition.
I
Iceshrimp. (1) Series of Fediverse software, consisting of Iceshrimp.JS and Iceshrimp.NET. (2) Official name for Iceshrimp.JS.
Iceshrimp.JS. A microblogging Fediverse software, which is a fork of Firefish, which in turn is a fork of Misskey. It focuses on de-bloating Misskey and introducing bug and security fixes, as well as stability, performance and usability improvements.
Iceshrimp.NET. A microblogging Fediverse software, which is a rewrite of Iceshrimp.JS in .NET stack from the ground up.
instance. A server which hosts a software that allows it to be a part of the Fediverse.
M
MFM. See Markup language for Misskey.
Markup language For Misskey. Custom markup language created for Misskey and also used by Misskey's forks, Iceshrimp.NET and Akkoma to stylize posts with a set of pre-made effects which can be mixed and matched.
Mastodon. A microblogging Fediverse software, which is the most popular one and comparing to other Fediverse software is relatively minimalistic.
Mastodon Glitch Edition. A microblogging Fediverse software, which is a fork of Mastodon, that adds features such as HTML- and Markdown-formatted toots and doodling.
Misskey. A microblogging Fediverse software, which initially started as a BBS-style forum and since then grown into a platform with rich functionality.

Pleroma. A microblogging Fediverse software, which is more feature-full than Mastodon with features such as emoji reactions, BBCode and Markdown formatting and custom frontends, while being more lightweight than Mastodon.

to react. To send an emoji to a post to express one's feelings about it. Not to be confused with to like.
S
Sharkey. A microblogging Fediverse software, which is the most popular active fork of Misskey. It adds new features and such as scheduled notes, profile backgrounds, Mastodon API compatibility and ListenBrainz support for showing music one is currently listening to.

toot. A post on Mastodon.

vaguepost. A post about something which doesn't provide context for the unfamiliar to understand what exactly this something is about.

WAFRN. Alternative name of Wafrn, which is abbreviation that stands for "We Accept Female Representing Nipples", referencing ban of adult content on Tumblr.
Wafrn. A software inspired by Tumblr that communicates with Fediverse and Bluesky natively.
woot. A post on Wafrn.
to woot. To post on Wafrn.
to wrench react. To use a 🔧 emoji or a variant of it to react to a post as a sign of disapproval.
